Dorothy, you're not in Kansas anymore...

Last weekend was the big drop-off weekend for my daughter's first away-from-home experience.  Well, she's been away from home before, but only for a day or two at a time.  Lesson number one is learning the difference between "wants" and "needs".  When I went away to school, I called home (collect) crying every day.  There was no e-mail, cell phone, text messaging, skype (which she doesn't have...yet) and we had to learn to make do.

I've always told my kids they can ASK for anything, right?  Not a problem.  Getting everything you ask for IS the problem.  I couldn't help but share this journey with you as we watch this little puff of a chick peck her way out of the shell and into the big open world...

And here it starts.  I KNEW as soon as her roommate came in with these adorable rain boots, a request wouldn't be far behind.  I love how she's specific - she needs "cute" rain boots!  Thank goodness she told me, I wouldn't want to pick up any with pictures of machine guns on them or anything ~  :D

Keep it comin' girl...

The next day her little mind is still awhirl with things she "needs".  Have you ever really NEEDED a chip clip?

Ever since she worked at the pizza place, she's neurotic about people using coasters.  Maybe there's some antique wood in their room she's trying to protect or something, you never know.

I don't even know what this is - I had to ask my other kids...

I thought I'd send her a friendly little text myself...

She answers...Shouldn't college kids not use the word "gunna"?

Oh wait - one more thing!  But look, she's starting to learn already some things can w-a-i-t.

Hmmm, good question...

My other daughter (Meredith) forwarded me a text she got from Sara which is a RIOT!  I guess since my husband works for a grocery chain that's what she's used to.

And sometimes I get a text from a friend at just the right time, who secretly knows I need some friend therapy and Mexican food, and she swoops in to save the day!
My answer, of course, was "All of the above!".

Mexican restaurant?! You need a vacation. You're the best mom ever. I would have deactivated my phone, assumed a new identity, and relocated to a secret remote location. And I would have bought myself cute rain boots to do it all in, and sent a picture home.

Funny!

When I left home I never called my mom for anything - heck I traveled the world alone and all I called home for was to tell my parents I was still alive and safe! I find it funny that today's girls have their moms running around doing everything for them.

A friend of mine has a daughter going to uni in a couple of weeks and I know she is going to be calling a texting hundreds of times a day for every little thing. Once we had to drop off Advil at her daughter's work - I can assure you, my mother would never have done that for me!

OmGosh those texts were so funny. I love it. Thanks for sharing all the needs of your girl. Makes my feel good because my kids are always asking me for things. I guess it never ends. LOL

@Suburb. Princess - AMEN! Like I told her, she can ask for anything, but NO is a pretty popular answer around here. I did mail her a package - homemade cookies! Learning to make-do is part of what it's all about - and waiting to come home to get her stuff! Good grief. Glad you popped over ~ have a fun weekend ~ ♥

That's so funny! Gotta love all of this new technology today. My daughter is in the 7th grade. I didn't buy her a new pair of shoes this year yet because I knew she would see something the other girls are wearing and then not want to wear what she picked out or something like that! So far she hasn't said anything. I guess it is because they are all still wearing their flip flops but I'm waiting. I know it will come up in conversation soon! lol

Oh, and where I live you can't receive cell phone service. My daughter wants a cell phone because all of her friends at school has one. I said when will you text or call them because you can't do it at school and you can't do it at home. I guess she thought she could on the 5 minutes of the 40 minute ride home on the bus that she would have cell phone signal! lol

I love Mexican food! We eat there almost every Sunday after church.

Have a Great Weekend!

Oh those needs we so need! My youngest daughter is beginning college next week. She is going locally but she has a list of needs too. Not 'cute' boots yet, but as I just showed her this post, they will probably be next :)

So fun stopping by to visit with you!
Kindly, ldh
