Since we're all getting ready for back-to-school time, I thought a good flashback would be from grade school. This is my kindergarten picture and it's such a hoot because look at the curls on the side of my head. These were the pre-curling iron days and so I remember curlers being in my hair - but only in the front! It's stick straight in the back. And that was my favorite dress back then - tiny hearts and daisies. From JCPenney, I'm sure. What wasn't?!
Then for a splash of fun, I scanned one page from my third grade report card. You'll probably have to click on it to enlarge it and read it. The reports cards went through various forms - from a fold-out card to five or six pages of reports, then finally just the half sheet of paper in high school. This is the page for "other areas".
I think I could've scanned any page from any year because they all basically said the same thing - she talks too much, she talks too loudly, etc. - but the grades were always good, so that counts for something right? I love how she put "I'm trying to impress on her that a young lady should speak in softer tones." (I think she and my husband would agree on that one). And come on, seriously - a grade for art?
Finally, and this isn't a flashback, but with so many starting school this week, I wanted to share my favorite back-to-school book. I didn't discover it until after my son started school so I bought it for each of my girls when they went into kindergarten. It's called "The Kissing Hand". Basically the long and short of it is that the little raccoon is afraid of starting school so his mom kisses his hand and then whenever he's at school and misses home, he can put his hand to his cheek and feel the warmth and coziness of mom and home. Then he gives her hand a kiss also for when she misses him. It's ADORABLE.
I hope everyone has a great school year and if you'd like to join in more pre-digital photo fun, pop on over to Alicia's at More Than Words and join in!

I love that book. That report card was hilarious. my oldest is very talkative too. I fear what will be on my sons report card. Yikes.
That picture is too cute. I love it.
have a great weekend.
Yup, curlers. Pink spongey ones. And in my case I think we did have curling irons, but curlers were still the most child friendly option. Ha ha- don't you want to show that teacher up by setting up a blog on the internet and talking all you want? Oh wait...
Awww look at you! So cure! What a great idea of sharing school pictures when school is starting. Really good idea. Keep up the good work. Following you - have a great weekend.
How great that you still even had your report cards...very impressive. Laughing at your teachers comment. Sometimes a girl just has to be loud, right?
I will have to check out The Kissing Hand...haven't heard of it, but it sounds like a bit of a teary book...my kind.
Oh man, the curlers...I hated those things. I would always end up taking half of them out in the middle of the night because it was so uncomfortable to sleep in them.
I always got the same things on my report cards too "Lori is such a chatterbox" was a very common note at the bottom every single year of elementary school.
Cute memories from grade school. The teachers always said I talked too much, also.
Nice review on the book. Sounds like a great one.
Now why were you gone 15 days one quarter?
I got a chuckle out of "Art... is to provide each child opportunities to express himself creatively in his own unique way." Yes, so long as it looked exactly like the teacher's. heehee
Oh I love it! But I was very quite in school! I was bored and day dreamed 99% of the time! How fun to have a look back!
Hugs, Lisa
As usual, you have the best posts on the blog!
Thanks so much for sharing this book! My granddaughter is going to preschool this year. This will be her second year, but her first at this school. What a wonderful gift for her!
LOL, I remember wearing those pink soft curlers in my hair when I went to bed! And I also just wore them in the front!!
And I loved those yellow, thin, report cards! I wish my mom kept mine!
haha...I had the soft pink rollers too! Hm..but I wore them all around my head, so sleeping (if I remember right) was interesting!
A cute kindergarten photo! And I love how your 3rd grade teacher so "sweetly" wrote about your being a little loud. haha
And I have to say although my kindergarten report card didnt say I was too loud...it did say "Maria has to have her own way..." um...really? haha I feel that am so not like that now...I would rather follow someone elses lead...like picking out a place to eat is sooo hard for me to decide!
I am finally gettting a chance to stop by Friday Photo Flashback... and yikes! It is already almost time for another!
Blessings & Aloha!
I would love it if you get a chance to stop by my place :o)
Lara's oldest (Faith) started Kindergarten if you can believe it!! And she said here teacher read that to them on the first day of school!!! Faith was talking about a story about the racoon and kissing the hand and I said to Lara Beth just shared that on her blog about this book!! They sent home a note to parents about the book!!! Sounds like a good one!!!
I recently found some of my old report cards - in the comments section from 2nd grade said Rebecca would rather run around being a horse then get along with the boys - I think this translate into something like "Does not play well with others" lol Cute photo of you.
